IV Insertion Image

This IV Certification Course is designed specifically for licensed healthcare professionals whose scope of practice includes initiating IV therapy—such as RNs, LPNs, and other qualified providers. It is not intended for the general public.

Please note: Medical Assistants (MAs) are not permitted to start IVs in New York State. Under NY Education Law Section 6530(11), it is considered unprofessional conduct for licensed professionals to delegate tasks such as IV insertion to unlicensed individuals. Even if someone is capable, only those legally authorized by licensure may perform these procedures. Institutions and providers must ensure compliance with their state's laws and regulations. CPR123 is not responsible for any misconduct or violations of your workplace policies or licensing restrictions.

What You'll Learn

This course focuses on the instruction and practice of inserting traditional over-the-needle peripheral ("short") IV catheters. Participants will receive hands-on training using a manikin arm, along with essential didactic instruction covering:

  • Pre-procedure preparation
  • Anatomy and physiology related to peripheral IV access
  • INS standards, along with AVA, CDC, and JCAHO guidelines
  • Legal and professional considerations
  • Clinician and patient preparation
  • Vein site and catheter selection
  • Partner-based vein assessment practicum
  • Venipuncture techniques
  • Post-insertion care and securement
  • Complication prevention and troubleshooting
  • Tips for managing difficult venous access

After the Course:

This program is intended to equip healthcare professionals with the foundational knowledge and confidence to independently perform IV catheter insertions in accordance with best practices and national standards. Please be advised that this course does not include a live stick competency test. Institutions may require separate verification or skills testing upon completion.

Important Notes:

  • If you are licensed in a different state, please verify with your state board that this course aligns with your specific scope of practice and local regulations.
  • Non-nursing professionals may take this course only if IV insertion falls within their legal scope of practice, as defined by their license or certification.
  • Example: MAs are permitted to start IVs in some states (e.g., Texas), but not in New York State.

Bonus: All students may attend a complimentary refresher course within one year of completing the program.
